Natural light, Brooklyn winter

The fourteen-minute window we plan whole shoots around.

Turrell Ganzfeld

From mid-January through the second week of March, the rooms we work in get a low, sideways sun for about fourteen minutes a day. It hits the back wall around 3:47pm and it's gone before the kettle boils.

We plan whole call sheets around it. Make-up touches up by the doorway. Wardrobe stages two looks deep. The crew is ready before the light is.

The result is a quality of skin we can't get any other way. Cold, particular, honest. We've tried matching it with continuous fixtures and never quite made it work.
